Tom Shea

EDUCATION & OUTREACH COORDINATOR

Tom grew up in North Carolina where he spent most of his free time at the barn and riding horses. He attended NC State University where he studied Conservation Biology and Animal Science. During his summers in college, Tom spent time in Idaho and Montana in internships with grazing experts and working as a ranch hand. After graduating he moved to eastern South Dakota where he managed a cow/calf to finish operation. Then, Tom moved to Minnesota, where he was the Livestock Manager for a custom grazing company. He specialized in using sheep and goats to manage land. During this time, Tom developed a special interest in raising small ruminants and solar grazing. After spending a couple of years in Minnesota, Tom and his wife decided to move back to North Carolina, where he worked as a Livestock Extension Agent.

Tom has a Masters degree in Veterinary Science focused on Livestock Systems Management from the University of Illinois. He has utilized his degree and diverse livestock experience to develop whole system management programs focused on grazing, health and economics for cattle, sheep, goats, horses and ostriches. Tom enjoys working with established ranchers as well as new and beginning producers.

Outside of work Tom can be found working with sheep, riding horses or hiking with his wife and border collie.
