2025 Pastured Poultry Conference will feature three days of workshops for all experience levels.

We'll feature JP Dinnell from Echelon Front as our Keynote Speaker.

This testimonial captures the experience:

[We’d get] more involved with APPPA earlier by meeting more people and making more contacts. Over the past couple years, we've gotten more involved, and the contacts we have met [at the conference] have benefited us throughout the year by being able to pick up the phone. We’re getting advice from people who have been there done that, and that has really been great for our business and has projected us to a whole new level. --Josh Morrison, Earnest Roots Farm.

First Ever Bale Grazing Winter Pasture Walk
Jan

First Ever Bale Grazing Winter Pasture Walk

Have you heard about or seen bale grazing and wondered if it would work for you?
Do you want to learn the nuances and logistical context for implementing this regenerative practice?
Are you interested in seeing the impacts of bale grazing on land and animals from a practicing farmer?
Do you need some fresh air, a bowl of chili and to network with other beef farmers in the snow (or possibly mud)?

If you answered Yes to any of these questions, The Northeast Region National Grazing Lands Coalition, the Cornell Cooperative Extension SCNY Dairy & Field Crops Team, and Angus Glen Farm are teaming up to showcase the First-ever Bale Grazing Winter Pasture Walk!

  • You'll see beef cattle grazing round bales strategically fed on pasture and silvopastures to improve pasture quality and productivity.

  • You'll see the realities of efficient winter feeding on pasture, while protecting soils and prioritizing animals welfare and performance.

  • You'll see demos of the "right tools for the job" including freeze-resistant water systems and "living barns"

  • You'll hear different perspectives on hay "waste" and its contributions to pasture improvement.

  • You'll see if this is a practice that makes sense for your farm (we think it will!)

The morning program will be a hardy, farm, dress accordingly, winter weather event followed by a light lunch and conversation. Space is limited for this workshop so first come-first serve. There is no cost for the event, but pre-registration is required!

Please register ahead of time to help us plan at this link: https://scnydfc.cce.cornell.edu/event_preregistration_new.php?id=2489  In the case of cancellation due to "extreme winter weather" (think: road closings and emergency weather declarations) a cancellation email will be sent to those who have registered by 7 pm Friday, January 10th.

Questions can be directed to Betsy Hicks at bjh246@cornell.edu or Troy Bishopp at (315) 749-4528

This workshop is part of a National USDA-NRCS CIG Grant by the University of Kentucky Research Foundation entitled: Bale Grazing: A Practical, Low-Cost, and Environmentally-Sound Management Strategy to Winter Beef Cattle. The project partner states are Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.  You can learn more by visiting https://news.ca.uky.edu/article/usda-innovation-grant-bale-grazing-study-yielding-positive-results-kentucky

Innovative Grazing on Public Lands

Friday, November 15

Chama | 10:00 AM

Taos | 5:30 PM

These events are FREE to attend. Please RSVP below.

Across the Western US, public lands ranchers work to balance cattle grazing with sustainable rangelands that support healthy streams and habitat for wildlife. The story of Three Creeks involves 37 ranchers who manage livestock across 128,000 acres of public and private lands in Rich County, Utah. The area is a mix of ranchers’ private lands plus federal land (BLM and Forest Service) and state land. In 2001, the BLM faced litigation over livestock grazing on these public lands. This threatened economic stability for ranchers due to the potential restriction of grazing. In response, permittees sought alternative management options to ward off further litigation. Over ten years they worked with the BLM, FS, state of Utah to design and implement a new grazing plan to maintain rancher livelihoods and improve rangeland and stream conditions.

In this talk, Taylor Payne from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food and Kris Hulvey from the nonprofit Working Lands Conservation will share the story of the Three Creeks Project. Taylor, who lives in the ranching community where the project takes place, has deep roots in ranching and has worked with the ranchers involved in the project for the last 15 years. He has insight into the barriers faced by the ranchers when working with federal agencies, and the solutions that the group put in place to move forward with this innovative grazing plan. Kris is an ecologist who has worked with the community and other partners to track the benefits of the new grazing plan for the streams, and rangelands, providing data that can be used for adaptive management.

Please join us as Taylor and Kris share what they are learning about implementing innovative, flexible grazing management on public lands, and the benefits this type of grazing can bring.

Planning for Drought Resilience

Planning for Drought Resilience

This workshop is being taught by Dale Strickler, Agronomist and author of The Drought Resilient Farm.  This valuable workshop is being offered at no cost to you and includes lunch for livestock producers, farmers, ranchers and ag professionals.

The course is of particular value to ranchers, who in the face of drought are often forced into a difficult choice of having to either buy feed at highly inflated prices or sell their livestock at extremely depressed prices. Strickler explains how ranchers can not only avoid being cornered into this decision, but how they can actually manage to profit during droughts.

Advance registration is appreciated.  Please RSVP with name(s), email address and phone number to mary@kglc.org or call Mary at 785-562-8726.  For more information please call or text Mary.
